Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is an intense
exfoliation process that rejuvenates the skin, stimulating the
production of collagen and elastin, which will result in a firmer,
more youthful looking skin.
Microdermabrasion buffs the skin of fine lines and discoloration
while refining texture. Repeated treatments give excellent results
for the following skin conditions:
- Dull, oily or leathery skin texture
- Contracting enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Active acne and acne scarring
- Sun damaged skin
- Mild pigment irregularities
Microdermabrasion is particularly effective when used in conjunction
with IPL skin rejuvenation treatments.
The treatment process uses ultra-fine aluminium oxide crystals to
remove the upper, dead layer of the skin and the stratum corneum. A
closed vacuum system delivers the microcrystals through a tube and a
hand piece which makes contact with the skin at a 45° angle. At the
same time a vacuum tube removes both the crystals and the skin's
cellular debris. The Welwyn Aesthetic Clinic uses the Ultrapeel
system which is manufactured by Mattioli, who are the only
Microdermabrasion company in the world to be approved by the US Food
and Drug Administration, (FDA.) The sterile crystals are drawn
directly from a sealed container and the used crystals and debris
are deposited directly into a separate sealed waste container,
ensuring no cross contamination for either patient or operator.
What results can I expect, and how soon?
Depending on the area treated, you will notice an improvement in
your skin's appearance. Acne scars will be less obvious. Age spots
and fine lines are diminished and many patients report that their
skin seems to be softer, smoother, and younger-looking. After your
first treatment, your skin will have a fresh pink glow. Improvement
continues throughout your treatment programme. You will begin to
notice visible results after about the third treatment.
The final outcome is dependent upon the area and condition of the
skin being treated. Optimum results for most procedures are achieved
between 4-6 treatments administered at weekly intervals. Some
applications will require more, while others will respond
successfully after a shorter course of treatments. The results you
are trying to achieve will be your guide. Monthly follow-up
treatments are recommended to maintain the results of your initial
course of treatment.

Who performs the treatment?
Microdermabrasion should only be carried out by a
skilled operator. At the Welwyn Aesthetic Clinic all
treatments are carried out by a trained Registered
Nurse. The operator's ability to assess the clients
needs and completely control the depth of the treatment
through the number of passes and power settings is very
important.
What's the down time?
Unlike deep chemical peels or plastic surgery, there is
little or no down time. At most, patients will be pink
(and must consequently wear sunscreens diligently) for a
day or two after the treatment.
What are the benefits of Microdermabrasion over other
procedures?
There is minimal discomfort and recovery is fast.
Furthermore, it is effective on all body areas. Chemical
peels are most effective on the face but are less
effective on the neck, chest, and hands.
Microdermabrasion is superb on the face and on the hands
(even the knuckles), chest, neck, knees, elbows, etc.
Microdermabrasion is very useful prior to some IPL or
laser procedures and can be used to prepare the skin for
the treatment.
Who is not suitable for
Microdermabrasion?
- Anyone who is currently taking the drug Roaccutane
- Anyone who is suffering from cold sores on their face
- Anyone with active psoriasis or eczema
- Anyone with sunburn
Microdermabrasion is very safe and suitable for all skin
types. However people with Skin Type 5 will need careful
assessment prior to treatment.
